Urban and Regional Planning Technician

Civil engineering technologists and technicians provide technical support and services to scientists, engineers and other professionals, or may work independently in fields such as structural engineering, municipal engineering, construction design and supervision, highways and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering and environmental protection.

Typical Duties:

  • Provides technical information to the public and municipal staff on matters related to  municipal or regional planning programs and applicable municipal regulations;
  • Assists other public agencies on matters related to planning, zoning, and urban development legislation;
  • Administers the receipt of municipal development applications;
  • Ensures that development plans are compliant with the relevant zoning laws;
  • Conducts technical reviews of development applications to ensure they adhere to technical prerequisites;
  • Maintains a database of development applications both historical and current;
  • Conducts on-site investigations to ensure adherence to approved development permits;
  • Researches and collects data on various planning issues affecting a municipality;
  • Provides site maps and graphics or inclusion in planning reports;
  • Interprets blueprints, maps, and regulations to assist other municipal officials;
  • Prepares public notices dealing with regional or municipal planning initiatives;
  • Coordinates and facilitates public consultations on matters related to regional or urban planning proposals;
  • Researches and documents the public’s views on specific planning proposals’
  • Prepares preliminary layout approvals of proposed municipal development projects;
  • Assists in the tabulation and completion of land survey and other statistical data;
  • Compiles reports and recommendations on matters such as special use permits;
  • Employs current planning legislation to address various planning issues;
  • Uses design and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software to support the development of land use planning;

Educational Requirements:

Two-year college program in civil engineering technology or urban and regional planning.
