Structural Engineering Technologist

Civil engineering technologists and technicians provide technical support and services to scientists, engineers and other professionals, or may work independently in fields such as structural engineering, municipal engineering, construction design and supervision, highways and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering and environmental protection.

Typical Duties:

  • Prepares conceptual and detailed structural drawings of various building projects;
  • Assists engineers in the design of plans and preliminary cost estimates;
  • Visits sites to generate data for the design and implementation of a structure;
  • Estimates and calculates the amount of material required for completion of a project;
  • Validates that designs conform to building codes and other regulations;
  • Reviews documents for architectural coordination;
  • Ensures that the structural design drawings incorporate all design features and maintain design style;
  • Contributes design modifications to improve the quality and function of the design;
  • Employs specialized computer software to model proposed structural component of a building project;
  • Supports the work of the project manager, engineers, CAD staff and other disciplines;
  • Coordinates with electrical, mechanical, geotechnical, and building envelope sub-contractors on the building design and construction completion;
  • Liaises with the general contractor;
  • Prepares tender contracts for structural components of a building project;
  • Participates in structural field inspections from initial assessment to final review.

Educational Requirements:

Three-year college program in civil engineering technology
