Mechanical Engineering Technologist

Mechanical engineering technologists and technicians provide technical support and services or may work independently in mechanical engineering fields such as the design, development, maintenance and testing of machines, components, tools, heating and ventilating systems, power generation and power conversion plants, manufacturing plants and equipment. They are employed by consulting engineering, manufacturing and processing companies, institutions and government departments.

Typical Duties:

  • Analyzes and resolves mechanical problems based on knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals;
  • Prepares or modifies mechanical engineering drawings and other technical documents;
  • Determines the dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications needed to manufacture mechanical components;
  • Applies computer-assisted drafting technologies to produce mechanical engineering drawing of components or systems;
  • Designs mechanical components, processes and components for, among others, power transmission systems, process piping, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning;
  • Analyzes machines and automated systems on the basis of measures of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and pneumatics;
  • Verifies specifications for materials, processes, and operations during the design and production of mechanical components;
  • Determines and predicts the effects of manufacturing processes on materials;
  • Designs, builds and tests mechanical component prototypes;
  • Employs computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology during prototyping and production of mechanical components;
  • Develops and implements materials testing processes;
  • Employs project management techniques during the conduct of projects including the preparation of costs, materials estimates, and project schedules;
