Marine Engineering Technologist
Mechanical engineering technologists and technicians provide technical support and services or may work independently in mechanical engineering fields such as the design, development, maintenance and testing of machines, components, tools, heating and ventilating systems, power generation and power conversion plants, manufacturing plants and equipment. They are employed by consulting engineering, manufacturing and processing companies, institutions and government departments.
Typical Duties:
- Applies knowledge of electronics and electrical equipment to operate shipboard generators and motors;
- Uses electrical and electronic test equipment to troubleshoot, repair, or maintain engine and electrical systems on board a vessel;
- Maintains the seaworthiness of a ship including stability and structures;
- Analyzes proposed engineering changes to marine vessels to determine their effect on a ship’s systems and equipment;
- Provides on-board technical support during the implementation of modifications to a vessel;
- Identifies engineering design issues or faults during the design stage of a ship;
- Works with marine engineers to devise solution to design problems;
- Provides technical input to engineering specifications and drawings;
- Reviews and updates technical documentation for naval systems and equipment;
- Designs and implements maintenance plans for shipboard equipment and systems
Educational Requirements:
Three-year college program in mechanical or marine engineering technology
