Industrial Hygiene Technician

Chemical technologists and technicians provide technical support and services or may work independently in chemical engineering, chemical and biochemical research and analysis, industrial chemistry, chemical quality control and environmental protection. They are employed by research and development and quality control laboratories, consulting engineering companies, in chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and a variety of other manufacturing and processing industries, and by utilities, health, educational and government establishments.

Typical Duties:

  • Inspects and evaluates workplace environments, equipment, and practices, in order to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations;
  • Inspects specified areas of large facilities to ensure the presence of fire prevention equipment, safety equipment, and first-aid supplies;
  • Investigates health-related complaints, and inspects facilities to ensure that they comply with public health legislation and regulations;
  • Collects samples of hazardous materials, or arrange for sample collection;
  • Recommends measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials;
  • Collaborates with engineers and physicians to institute control and remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment;
  • Develops and maintains hygiene programs such as noise surveys, continuous atmosphere monitoring, ventilation surveys, and asbestos management plans;
  • Investigates accidents to identify causes and to determine how such accidents might be prevented in the future;
  • Investigates the adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting, and other conditions that could affect employee health, comfort, or performance.;
  • Prepares reports, including observations, collecting data, and making recommendations for program performance improvement;
  • Collaborates with public sector district administrators, facility managers, safety officers, and risk management staff to assist in identifying and abating environmental hazards;
  • Conducts environmental monitoring in school settings

Educational Requirements:

       Two-year college program in chemical engineering technology
