Electronics Engineering Technologist

Electrical and electronics engineering technologists and technicians may work independently or provide technical support and services in the design, development, testing, production and operation of electrical and electronic equipment and systems. They are employed by electrical utilities, communications companies, manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment, consulting firms, and in governments and a wide range of manufacturing, processing and transportation industries.

Typical Duties:

  • Designs and produces electrical and electronics drawings and layouts;
  • Designs and builds electronic circuits, equipment, and systems to meet engineering specifications and job requirements;
  • Provides the technical expertise required to assemble, install, repair, calibrate and maintain electronic systems;
  • Undertakes prototyping and modification of electronic circuitry;
  • Analyzes and solves technical problems related to electronics engineering;
  • Participates in the production and quality control of electronic equipment;
  • Conducts acceptance and performance tests on newly designed components or systems;
  • Writes software programs for microprocessors;
  • Integrates software and hardware components
  • Analyzes and implements engineering designs for producing electronic devices and systems, and microprocessor-based control systems;
  • Analyses and troubleshoots systems that are comprised of microprocessors, microcontrollers, logic and digital circuits, low and high power circuits, as well as electromechanical components;
  • Ensures systems are compliant with local regulation, established standards, and company policies and procedures;
  • Educates equipment operators of correct and safe use of electronic systems;
  • Installs and operates specialized test equipment to diagnose and test the performance of electronic components or systems;
  • Assists scientist and engineers during the conduct of applied research in electronic engineering.

Educational Requirements:

Three-year college program in electrical/electronic engineering technology
