Electricity Distribution Technician
Electrical and electronics engineering technologists and technicians may work independently or provide technical support and services in the design, development, testing, production and operation of electrical and electronic equipment and systems. They are employed by electrical utilities, communications companies, manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment, consulting firms, and in governments and a wide range of manufacturing, processing and transportation industries.
Typical Duties:
- Operates and monitors equipment that distributes electrical power;
- Tests, inspects, and maintains power distribution equipment;
- Maintains and repairs auxiliary equipment used in electricity distribution systems;
- Calibrates and maintains protective equipment for electricity distribution systems;
- Ensures a safe working environment related to power distribution equipment;
- Isolates work areas without disrupting the flow of power;
- Responds to emergencies such as transformer or transmission line failures;
- Installs or modifies electrical power control or distribution equipment;
- Recommends equipment replacements;
- Maintains records of electrical power distribution infrastructure;
- Compiles operational data on meter readings, power demands, and usage;
- Monitors and records control board readings to ensure that equipment is operating properly;
- Calculates load estimates and related equipment needs;
- Regulates the flow of power between generating stations, substations, distribution lines, and final users;
- Supervises contract personnel on the job site;
- Produces technical and job status reports.
Educational Requirements:
Two-year college program in electrical engineering technology
