Civil Engineering Technician

Civil engineering technologists and technicians provide technical support and services to scientists, engineers and other professionals, or may work independently in fields such as structural engineering, municipal engineering, construction design and supervision, highways and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering and environmental protection.

Typical Duties:

  • Helps civil engineers plan, design, and oversee construction of roads, bridges, transportation facilities, water and sewage systems, flood ways and more;
  • Maintains civil engineering project records, logs, and inventories;
  • Contributes to the assessment of the political, social, and environmental impacts of civil engineering projects;
  • Reviews project drawings and structural specifications to determine dimensions of a structure or system as well as its material requirements;
  • Facilitates communication among project stakeholders involved in the design and implementation of civil engineering projects;
  • Inspects project site and evaluates contactor work to detect design flaws and to ensure conformance to design specifications and applicable codes.
  • Collects and appropriately applies civil engineering data from existing graphics, reports, and other documents;
  • Contributes to the collection, processing, and interpretation of technical data related to civil engineering projects;
  • Calculates dimensions, square footage, profile and component specifications and material quantities;
  • Analyzes proposed site factors and creates design maps, graphs, and diagrams to illustrate findings;
  • Communicates information effectively and accurately by interpreting, translating, and producing civil engineering documents;
  • Monitors the quality and quantity of work for civil engineering projects;
  • Contributes to the evaluation of equipment, materials, and methods employed in the implementation and completion of civil engineering projects;
  • Applies the principles of mathematics and science to analyse and solve technical problems related to civil engineering projects;

Educational Requirements:

Two-year college program in civil engineering technology
