Building Engineering Technologist
Architectural technologists and technicians may work independently or provide technical assistance to professional architects and civil design engineers in conducting research, preparing drawings, architectural models, specifications and contracts and in supervising construction projects. Architectural technologists and technicians are employed by architectural and construction firms, and governments.
Typical Duties:
- Researches information and discusses with clients their construction design requirements;
- Consults with architects, engineers and contactors to maintain standards of work;
- Participates in the review of construction feasibility studies and preliminary budgets;
- Liaises with contractors, design professionals, and local construction inspection authorities in order to coordinates activities and ensure the issuance of permits;
- Performs design criteria calculations;
- Resolves problems related to restrictions, construction methods, and equipment;
- Conducts site surveys to generate information on, among others, construction dimensions and environmental issues and to verify specifications;
- Employs specialized software to produce preliminary and detailed construction plans;
- Ensures compliance with codes and by-laws;
- Participates in the coordination of the work of consultants and contractors;
- Prepares reports related to specific construction projects;
- Organizes and maintains files on construction specifications, contract documents, and reference manuals;
- Reads and interprets structural, electrical, mechanical and site plans to ensure the integrity of construction activities;
- Updates site plans and building specifications based in information received from architects and engineering consultants;
- Manages AutoCad libraries, drawing inventories, and design archives.
Educational Requirements:
Three-year college program in civil engineering or architectural technology
